Timely, convenient, and affordable education is just a few clicks of the keyboard away with the launch of the new CyberSeminar series from the IAFE. The IAFE CyberSeminars are webinars — interactive presentations viewed on the World Wide Web while simultaneously listening in on a conference phone call.
The Marin County (California) Fair is frequently cited as an innovator and is a three-time winner of the prestigious Louis Merrill Award for superior achievement from the Western Fairs Association. For the 2008 fair a theme was selected which not only exemplified the attitudes and focus of their community but also meant examining the fair from every angle to implement practices, operations and programming that would incorporate the theme. After extensive research and planning the result was “The Greenest County Fair on Earth”.
You are invited to see the results – how the Marin County Fair implemented the “green” theme and showcased environmental stewardship at every turn – and hear manager Jim Farley discuss the research, the collaborative partnerships, the challenges and, importantly, the results. There will be opportunities to ask questions and find out about the story behind the headlines.
The growing focus on “going green” and the role that fairs can play in their community to showcase environmental sustainability is an integral part of the educational programming the IAFE offers to our members. The opportunity to take an in-depth look at what one fair has done is important and is being offered to all members at no charge. This CyberSeminar is free and we invite you to gather your staff members, board members and volunteers around the computer and the phone to “attend” this important session.
About Our Presenter
Jim Farley was appointed Manager of the Marin Center in 1979. The Marin Center in San Rafael, California, opened in 1971, serves as Marin County's premier performing arts and conference center set on an eighty acre park and fairgrounds. The Center was originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
In 1986, Farley was asked to manage the concert booking, corporate sponsorship, exhibits, publicity and marketing for the annual Marin County Fair. In 1991, he was appointed Manager of the Marin County Fair. The Marin County Fair has grown significantly in stature, attendance, facilities, exhibits, and programs, and is considered one of the most innovative county fairs in the United States.
In 2005, he became the Director of the newly-created Department of Cultural and Visitor Services for Marin County. The Department now has an annual budget of over $6 million and employs a full-time staff of 18 and part-time staff of 300.
Farley started as an usher at the Marin Center in 1974 and served as the Marin Center's first Events Coordinator from 1975 to 1979. He is a member of the International Association of Assembly Managers, Western Fairs Association, Western Arts Alliance, Association of Performing Arts Presenters, and International Association of Fairs and Expositions.
Registration Procedure
Technology will make it convenient for members to log-on to the Internet and dial in to a conference call from the convenience of their office or home (long distance charges apply). A high-speed Internet connection is recommended to view the seminar. Registration to participate will be by location, so members are encouraged to gather additional staff, volunteers, or board members around the computer and phone to join in for this learning experience. Each CyberSeminar will last between 60 and 90minutes, and registered participants will receive hand-outs and related material by e-mail in advance of the session.
Significant interest has been generated in CyberSeminars since first announced to the membership at the 2006 IAFE Annual Convention. For more information about the CyberSeminars, contact Rachel Stutesmun or Marla Calico at the IAFE office (800/516-0313).
